In 1948, the Japanese government designated May 5 as a national holiday to celebrate the joy of all children and express gratitude to their mothers. Until then, the Tango no Sekku was known as the "Boy's Festival" and the Hina-Matsuri as the "Girl Festival". In 1948 this holiday was renamed Kodomo no Hi. For this festival, the families raise the Koi Nobori ("carp flag"): a large, black one for the father, a red one for the mother and one blue one for each child. At the festival in Bad Langensalza, origami is folded, carp flags are made, mandalas are colored in and much more.
